27th March 1814 – Campaign Diary

Blucher is surprised at Roermond and defeated by Macdonald
Fourth French and Bavarian start the Rougemont campaign
Wellington is surprised and defeated at Mondragon by Soult
An encounter battle between Sixth French and Spanish armies at Mataro is a draw
First French and Prussian Army
At Roermond a surprise attack by three French corps
Prussians have orders to halt and resupply
French - 34000 infantry, 3000 cavalry, 90 guns
Prussian – 38,800 infantry, 3000 cavalry, 90 guns
French win battle, Prussians abandon Roermond
At Heerlen Prussian corps attacks French infantry brigade
After a short battle the French retreat towards Maastricht
Second French and Russian Army
Both Armies rest, resupply and reorganise
Russians establish depots at Mainz and Worms
French cavalry recce F06, receive 100 casualties from artillery fire in G05 and return to corps

Both armies rest , regroup and resupply

The French start the battle outnumbered three to two
Both sides receive reinforcements during the day
By late afternoon 28 French and 2 Spanish corps have still not arrived
Artillery on both sides have failed to cause sufficient casualties to attack
Both commanders decide to wait until their whole army is on the battlefield
