Summary
The French plan is to pin the British and
attack the Spanish
They were not aware that a
guerrilla band held a village on the flank of their advance, and were forced to
detach a brigade to take the village
This delay allowed the
Spanish to redeploy to meet the attack.
The Italian corps was
ordered to take the hill to the south of Mataro
To do so they had to pass
through difficult terrain
The delay allowed the
British to occupy the hill with cavalry and infantry
The Italian gunners routed
the infantry on the hill
The nearby cavalry were
shaken, and routed in turn by the Italian cavalry
With the loss of two
brigades Murray ordered his corps to retreat
Espana immediately ordered
the Spanish corps to retreat
The difficult terrain slowed
down the French attack
This allowed the allied
corps to deploy to meet the attack
The delay also robbed the
French of sufficient time to deliver their attack
Total casualties, including from earlier battles, at the
end of the battle
French 800
casualties
British 600
casualties and two brigades in rout
Spanish 100
casualties and one guerrilla in rout
