28th March 1814 – Battle of Maastricht


Maastricht Campaign area

Both corps have orders to attack

4 Prussian corps         attack Maastricht
7 French corps            move to E02 on attack

Note – 12 French infantry brigade starts the game in rout

Move 1 – 0800 to 0900
Both 4 and 7 corps arrive on the table
12 infantry brigade moves towards Maastricht, which is held by 14 brigade
 

Move 2 – 0900 to 1000
French and Prussian cavalry deploy to cover the advance of their respective corps
12 infantry brigade has reached Maastricht and safety
Move 3 – 1000 to 1100
Both corps start to deploy

Move 4 – 1100 to 1200
Artillery unlimber and infantry continue to deploy
French infantry enter the farm

Move 5 – 1200 to 1300
Both French and Prussian gunners open fire on enemy cavalry, but  no casualties
French cavalry advance to engage Prussian dragoons
French occupy the farm


Move 6 – 1300 to 1400
Prussian dragoons charge and win melee, French cavalry withdraw shaken
Artillery continue to fire, but again with no casualties
French garrison the farm

Move 7 – 1400 to 1500
Prussian dragoons charge and rout the shaken French cavalry with 40% casualties
The Prussians fail to rally, and charge the nearby gunners whilst disordered
The gunners fire and kill 10% of the French dragoons, who retreat shaken
Without cavalry support the Prussians will be hard put to take the French held farm
And even if they do, they will then have to attack Maastricht
Move 8 – 1500 to 1600
Prussian gunners receive artillery casualties but pass morale test
Prussian shaken cavalry retreat behind infantry and rally
Move 9 – 1600 to 1700
French artillery fire on gunners again, who rout with 20% casualties
Nearby infantry brigade test morale for rout, fail and join rout
Prussian commander orders a general retreat
Prussian gunners and infantry rout
Prussians lose the artillery duel and rout with 200 casualties
Their supporting infantry fail their morale and join the rout
A second infantry brigade started the battle with 800 casualties
The cavalry have rallied but are weakened with 100 casualties

Game Casualties
7 French corps lose 400 cavalry
4 Prussian corps lose 100 cavalry and 200 gunners

Game Summary
Both corps were moving to Maastricht on attack orders
Both deployed their cavalry to cover their deployment as soon as they sighted the enemy
The French occupied the farm and the artillery exchanged fire
The French cavalry advanced and were charged by the Prussian dragoons
The French lost the melee and routed with heavy casualties
The artillery duel continued.
First the Prussian cavalry were shaken and had to retire
Then the Prussian gunners were hit twice and routed
The supporting infantry brigade failed their morale test and joined the rout
The Prussian commander ordered a general retreat

Total casualties, including from earlier battles,  at the end of the battle
7 French corps 2,800 casualties 2 brigades in rout
4 Prussian corps 1,100 casualties 2 brigades in rout
